Renan, Joseph Ernest

Renan, Joseph Ernest
(1823–92)
   Philosopher and Theologian.
Renan was born in Tréguier, France. He was a student of semitic languages and German theology and he was also an expert archaeologist. Initially drawn to the Roman Catholic priesthood, he lost his faith in c. 1845. He is remembered for his Vie de Jésus, which caused a sensation. He portrayed Jesus as a delightful Jewish teacher, but he entirely removed the supernatural elements from the Gospel story. Because of the outcry, he was dismissed from his position at the Collège de France and he went on to write a five-volume Histoire du Peuple d’Israël and the popular Souvenirs d’Enfance et de Jeunesse.
